    • Beware of fake calls and messages claiming to represent the IRS. These fake impersonators will threaten or pressure for information or money. Know the procedures of the IRS, before you panic. Report emails, texts, social media accounts, calls and letters that claim to be from us.

      Social media

IRS  never sends direct messages by social media. If you received a social media message from an account that claims to be the IRS:

      • Report it to the social media provider

      • Send the full URL of the social media account to phishing@irs.gov. Subject: Social media.

      Text message

IRS  doesn't send text messages without your permission. If you get a suspicious IRS or Treasury Department text message:

      • Don't reply, click links or open attachments.

      • Send this information to phishing@irs.gov with the subject line “Text”:

        • Sender’s phone number and text message contents

        • Recipient’s phone number

        • Date, time and time zone received

      • Delete the original text

      Phone
      IRS-related calls
      • The IRS or private collection agencies may call you to address account matters. We never call to demand payment now, threaten arrest or inform you of a refund. How to know it’s the IRS.

      Mail
      IRS and tax-related letters
      • If you get a letter claiming to be the IRS, verify it’s us. Search IRS notices and letters. You can sign up to get notices in your IRS account. If you get a letter about an unclaimed refund, tax lien, tax debt relief or other scam, report to:

      • United States Postal Service

      • Federal Trade Commission

      • Report to phishing@irs.gov. Subject line: W8-BEN.

    • To protect yourself from identity theft, secure your personal information by shredding documents, using strong passwords with multi-factor authentication, monitoring credit reports and bank statements, being wary of phishing scams, and limiting what you carry in your wallet, like your Social Security card. Freeze or place fraud alerts on your credit, and be cautious about sharing data online or over the phone.

Protect your physical documents & wallet
      • Shred documents: Destroy bills, old credit cards, and other papers with sensitive info before tossing them.

      • Lock up records: Store important documents (birth certificate, SSN card) in a safe place at home.

      • Lighten your wallet: Don't carry your Social Security card or Medicare card unless necessary; only carry essential IDs and a couple of credit cards.

Secure your mail: Collect mail daily and place a hold when traveling.

      Secure your digital life
      • Use strong passwords: Combine letters, numbers, and symbols; don't reuse passwords; use a password manager.

      • Enable multi-factor authentication (MFA): Add an extra layer of security to accounts that offer it.

      • Be wary of phishing: Don't click suspicious links, open attachments, or give info via unsolicited calls, texts, or emails.

      • Secure your devices: Keep your computer, phone, and home Wi-Fi network password-protected and updated with security software.

      • Shop securely online: Use a dedicated, low-limit credit card for online purchases and ensure websites use "https".

      Monitor your accounts & credit
      • Check statements: Review bank and credit card statements monthly for unfamiliar charges.

      • Monitor credit reports: Get free reports annually and check for errors.

      • Consider credit freezes/alerts: Place a credit freeze or fraud alert with the major credit bureaus (Equifax, Experian, TransUnion).

      Be cautious with your information
      • Limit sharing: Don't share your SSN or financial details over the phone or online unless you initiated the contact and trust the source.

      • Limit social media: Don't post personal details like your birthday or hometown that thieves can use.
